Your 2-year-old just recited "one, two, three, seven, four!" and you felt a surge of parental pride — then immediately wondered whether they actually know what numbers mean. The short answer: probably not yet. But that's completely normal, and the way you respond to those early counting attempts shapes how they'll eventually understand numbers.
Here's what the developmental science says about how toddlers actually learn to count — and why the activities that work best are nothing like the flashcards in the parenting aisle.
Rote Counting vs. Meaningful Counting: What's Actually Happening
Before age 3, most "counting" is actually number naming — your toddler has memorized a sequence of sounds the way they'd memorize a song. They say "one, two, three" the same way they say "E-I-E-I-O." The numbers don't yet represent quantities in their minds.
Developmental psychologists call this the "transitional period." It typically runs from about 18 months to 4 years, and it's normal for children to recite numbers fluently while being unable to tell you how many cookies are on the table.
